Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is one of the most important names in modern architecture. He was not only an architect but also a designer and a great friend of nature. You don’t have to be an architect or designer to love this tour! Jyväskylä has often been called Athens, but Aalto seemed to imagine the city to be the Florence of the North. Aalto fell in love with Säynätsalo and Muuratsalo by naming the islands Tahiti in Lake Päijänne.
Jyväskylä has a unique and diverse set of architecture from all decades of Alvar Aalto's career. In Aalto's mind, the lush green landscape of Central Finland resembled the hills of Tuscany.
We will meet in the center of Jyväskylä, from where we will drive to Säynätsalo - Tahiti in Lake Päijänne. You will get to know one of Aalto's most significant design works: Säynätsalo Town Hall. After a guided tour time has been set aside for self-guided exploring and delicacies in the café of the Town Hall.
Next, we head to Aalto's summer residence: Muuratsalo Experimental House that is surrounded by forest. Getting there requires a few hundred meters of hiking. When the season is right, you can grab a few blueberries in your mouth. In winter or when the Experimental House is in private use, the tour is replaced with a visit to Muurame Church.
Then we drive to the center of Jyväskylä, where we see several Aalto sites from outside as a sightseeing tour. We tour the university’s main building and walk through the campus area. The endpoint of the tour is the Alvar Aalto Shop right in the center of Jyväskylä.
The guidance takes into account the age of the participants, Aalto-interest, and professional and studies background. During the guided tour of the Experimental House, you walk along forest paths and cliffs for about a kilometer in hilly terrain, as well as in campus area and in the city for about a kilometer, so the trip is not suitable for the very weak. Shoes and clothing suitable for the terrain and weather should be considered.
The duration of the tour is about 4 hours. The content can be changed according to the customer's wishes.
